Case Study: TEDI-London transforms the way they work through the use of the Microsoft Power Platform

Background

The Engineering & Design Institute London (TEDI-London) is a collaborative, design‐led engineering Higher Education provider co-founded by the three PLuS Alliance partners – Arizona State University, King’s College London and UNSW Sydney.

They are a new, degree-awarding UK Higher Education provider specialising in engineering education at undergraduate degree level and offer a new, hands-on engineering education for future engineers.

The Challenge/The Problem

TEDI-London were looking to make use of the Microsoft Power Platform in particular Power BI, within their marketing team. Furthermore, they were also hoping to gain the following:

  • A better understanding of Power BI / Dataverse / Azure relationships.
  • A better understanding of capacity, refresh timeouts and authentication issues.
  • How to build Power BI reports from Dynamics Marketing data.
  • General Dataverse reports with relationships between tables created within Microsoft Power BI.
  • How to adopt Power Query best practice
  • How to develop a Power BI report further after exporting a view from Dynamics into Power BI.

Given that TEDI-London were already working with Advantage who were their existing Microsoft Dynamics partner, the decision was made to continue working with Advantage on this project. The rationale behind this was that Advantage were already working with the business and doing a great job supporting their existing systems so there was no need to change provider for this project.

The Solution

The initial brief from TEDI-London was for Advantage to come into the business and provide tailored training on how to use Power BI across the business. However, as things became clearer, it was decided that Advantage was required to provide TEDI-London with some tailored Power BI consultancy in order to help them put together their Power BI reports.

The Benefits

The Power BI training was successfully delivered along with some extra Power BI consultancy to help them to construct their Power BI reports based on industry best practice and some of the following benefits were realised:

  • TEDI-London now had a complex set of Power BI reports enabling them to analyse students attendance, admissions activities and engagement and marketing efforts in real time.
  • TEDI-London were now able to analyse relationships between different variables to help make better decisions through Power BI.
  • TEDI-London were now able to analyse and resolve any issues that occurred within the marketing and engagement team quickly and effectively through Power BI.
