Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 R2: “I tend to wait for the second release”

Occasionally we hear from customers and prospective buyers that they prefer not to buy or implement software when it has been recently released to market. There is a concern that in the attempt to meet a release to market date, software bugs may have been missed out during testing.

It may therefore constitute good news that Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 R2 (or release 2) will be released later this year, around the end of October 2013. This is one year after Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013, which was subject to more than 6 months of Beta testing (including the TAP programme) after the internal testing and product development at Microsoft reached a mature stage.

The upcoming release of Microsoft Dynamics NAV R2 will include the update roll-ups that were made available throughout 2013 and there is new functionality to be enjoyed, namely in terms of deploying NAV 2013 in the Cloud, improvements in the cash flow modelling tool and refinements to the Rapid-Start implementation tools.

For companies already using Microsoft Dynamics NAV in older versions, it is a good opportunity to revisit the plans for integrating the ERP with other IT upgrade plans (Desktop and Server operating systems, mobile devices, applications, etc.). Advantage has completed new implementations of Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 and upgrades from NAV 5 and NAV 2009 since last year, meaning that the NAV team is ready as ever to deliver these projects with minimum risk.

Companies with bespoke programming on older versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV can also benefit from a business & systems review, aimed at determining the most beneficial upgrade path.

The upgrade toolkit supplied by Microsoft allows Advantage to bring to the newest version of NAV all your data and past customisations; whereas some companies will get more value from a simpler project by adopting the approach illustrated below:

Upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 R2

Taking advantage of Business Intelligence tools incorporated into Microsoft SQL Server, Advantage can set up a data warehouse where your old NAV data can co-exist and be included with reports alongside your new data from NAV 2013. This way you can benefit from re-tooling your business with a better performing version of NAV which is optimised for your current business requirements rather than being slowed down by legacy code and constraints.

Release and Availability

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 R2 will be released in Q4 2013. If you have not discussed your options with your account manager, now is the time.
